The Festival of Tara was started in 1997 by John Kramer and Cammie Leary, who had run the Highland Games at the Kansas City Renaissance Festival for many years, They partnered with another person in 1995 to create The Celtic Tribal Gathering which was a for-profit venture. That event had 2 years at Camp Gaea then the partnership dissolved..
It was decided to reboot the event as a one-time give-back to Camp Gaea, with all proceeds donated to camp. The one-time gift is now in its 18th year - due solely to the contributions and community of the Tara People themselves. All proceeds are still donated to Camp Gaea.

Tara now exists for the community it has created. Celebrations of bardic, cooking, brewing, crafting, and athletic demonstrations and friendly competitions define The Festival of Tara 2015.
